Before the first fire
Unused fireplace safety check in Utah County
For a fireplace that hasn't been used in a while, or a home you just moved into. Make sure it's safe before the first fire of the season.
Haven't used your fireplace in a while? Get a safety check before the first cozy night. I do this for fireplaces that sat for a season or for years, and for homes people just moved into. The last owner may have known a quirk. You don't. Lighting it "to see what happens" is how a small problem becomes a bad evening.
What I find on unused fireplaces is pretty consistent. Dead batteries in the remote and the receiver. Dust packed around the burner. Insects in the pilot or the burner ports. A gas valve nobody has turned in a long time. Logs that got knocked out of place during a move or a cleaning. A gasket that's flat. None of that means the fireplace is ruined. It means it needs a careful look and a controlled test, not a match and a hope.
On a safety check I go through the fireplace the way I would if I were about to use it in my own house. I look at the burner and the pilot area, the glass and the gasket, the switch and the remote, and the visible shape of the unit. Then I light it and watch. I want a stable flame, a pilot that holds, and a fireplace that stays on without smelling wrong or shutting off. If something fails that test, you get a straight explanation and a quote for the repair. If it passes, you can use it this winter with a lot more peace of mind.
This is also the right call if you bought a house and the home inspector wrote "fireplace present" and nothing else. Inspectors aren't fireplace techs. I am happy to be the person who actually runs it.
I still want you to do the simple things only: know where the gas shutoff is, and don't store anything in the fireplace.
Call (385) 230-3176 and tell me how long it's been since the fireplace ran. That one detail changes what I bring. We price match written local quotes.
Signs you need this
- You just got the keys and nobody knows when it last ran
- It sat through one or more winters
- The remote is missing or the batteries are corroded
- You tried it once, it smelled odd, and you shut it off
- You want a second set of eyes before holiday company
What I do
I inspect the fireplace and test-fire it under control. If it's sound, you leave with a fireplace you can actually use. If it isn't, you get a clear quote for the repair instead of a surprise on the coldest night of the year.

Questions I get
I haven't used my fireplace in years. Is it safe?
Don't assume it is. Dust, insects in the pilot, dead batteries, and parts that haven't moved in a long time are common on a fireplace that sat. A safety check is how I make sure it's ready before the first fire of the season, including in a home you just moved into.
My pilot won't stay lit. What can I check?
Check that the gas valve is on, and check the wall switch or remote batteries, then call. Don't take things apart.
How much does a fireplace repair or tune-up cost?
Every fireplace is different, so I give quotes by phone. Call (385) 230-3176 and I'll walk you through it. We price match written local quotes.
Do you work on wood-burning fireplaces or chimneys?
I work on gas fireplaces only, so I don't service wood-burning fireplaces or chimneys. For those, a local chimney sweep is the right call.
